Tom Brokaw's throat cancer allegations continue to persist however the truth behind Brokaw's condition is that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow, in August at the Mayo Clinic.

Former “NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Brokaw has been secretly suffering from bone cancer since last summer.

The newsman, who has been a special correspondent for NBC News since he stepped down from the anchor chair in 2004, said Thursday that he and his doctors believe he is making good progress.

“I remain the luckiest guy I know,” he said in a statement released by NBC News.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” Brokaw said

“I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter.”

Brokaw has worked at NBC News since 1966.
