Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently clarified that the venue for his upcoming showdown against Marcos Maidana on May 3rd is not yet set, contrary to earlier reports saying that the fight will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
HBO boxing analyst Harold Lederman revealed that Mayweather and his camp are considering fighting for the first time in New York City.
According to Lederman, the undefeated American is reportedly planning to stage the fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but the long-time HBO ringside scorer said that it will be better if Mayweather brings the fight to the Yankee Stadium.
"I honestly believe he should fight in Yankee Stadium," Lederman said in a BoxingScene interview. "This could be something like Sugar Ray Robinson fighting Joey Maxim in Yankees stadium, or all the Joe Louis fights that he had in Yankee Stadium. You know, it could really do a lot for the city, and for Mayweather's legacy."
Lederman said that Barclays Center is also an ideal venue for a big fight like the upcoming Mayweather-Maidana showdown, but he insisted that it can only hold a maximum of 18,000 spectators whereas the Yankee Stadium could have at least 60,000 seats available.
"Barclays Center, I believe, you'll do a maximum of 18,000 people," Lederman stressed. "Take the fight to Yankee Stadium and do 60,000 and it will sell 60,000 seats with Mayweather's popularity and with Marcos Maidana's popularity after that performance against Adrien Broner."
Lederman also said that Mayweather made the right decision of picking Maidana over British boxing icon Amir Khan, pointing out that Maidana's scintillating performance against Broner boosted his stock.
"Maidana's the tougher guy," Lederman said. "You can't take it away from him, sensational performance against Adrien Broner. He took it right to Adrien Broner, who you know, we all considered one of the really best up-and-coming fighters in the world."
And while Maidana pushed his stock to an all-time high, Lederman stressed that Khan has been unimpressive in his previous fights, and has yet to regain his reputation after his devastating knockout loss to Danny Garcia.
"Khan's just been losing," Lederman said. "I mean he got knocked out with one punch by Danny Garcia. People always accused Amir Khan of not having a great haw. So the truth probably is Marcos Maidana is the better fight, and I believe it is."
