Mario Kart 8 Release Date: New Trailer Shows New Features, New Items Like Piranha Plants And Boomerang Flowers [Video]

Nintendo released a new trailer for the upcoming addition to the Mario Kart series, the Mario Kart 8, which will reportedly be released on May 30, exclusively for Wii U.

The new trailer shows interesting new features that were never seen in previous titles, including the anti-gravity mechanics composed of hover wheels and gliders.

Also shown in the video are the ability get a "Spin Turbo" for colliding with other racers, along with brand new weapons players can use - the piranha plant pot and the boomerang flowers.

The piranha plant can be attached to the cart to chomp other racers, while also providing speed boost. On the other hand, the boomerang flowers can be thrown forward and has the ability to stun opponents. It can also hit other racers when it returns even if the player fails to hit his initial target.

According to GameSpot, Mario Kart 8 will feature 32 courses - 16 of it are new and the other 16 are remakes of classic courses. It has two new Rainbow road courses - one of it is a remake of the Nintendo 64 course.

The latest installment in the Mario Kart series will also feature music record by live performers in some courses, but the list of performers has yet to be revealed.

Mario Kart 8 producer Hideki Konno said in his latest roundtable interview that the soon-to-be-released game utilized the power of the Wii U to produce a visually impressive game that is incomparable to previous titles. Konno said that gamers should expect better-looking characters and animations.

"We've also been able to show movement on the karts and bikes that we haven't seen before," Konno said, via GameSpot. "We're seeing bounding, we're seeing different parts of the kart move, we're seeing dirt on the tires, we're seeing skid marks left on the course--again I think we've done a good job of utilizing that graphical power."

The Nintendo Wii U has been struggling to hit expectations, and the company is hoping that Mario Kart 8 will signal a good trend for the latest console.

Forbes suggested that Mario Kart 8 could work wonder for the Wii U console, but pointed out that the success of the game depends on how Nintendo will market their latest game.
