Chris Algieri will be a heavy underdog in his upcoming fight against Manny Pacquiao on November 22 in Macau, but the newly-crowned WBO junior welterweight champion likes his chances against the Filipino boxing icon.
Algieri, who is coming off a split decision win in their light welterweight title showdown in June, said in an interview that he will make life difficult for Pacquiao in their upcoming fight.
Algieri, who will put his unblemished 20-0 record on the line, said that his style and size would pose a lot of problems to Pacquiao similar to what happened to Provodnikov in his previous fight.
"I'm the bigger guy. I'm a bigger framed guy. I'm a heavier guy, and I think I present some very unique challenges to him. I'm long, strong, fast, athletic, good boxing skills. That's gonna to be tough for anyone in the division and I think that's going to be especially tough for Manny," Algieri said via BoxingScene.
The 30-year-old Huntington, New York native also added that he is not just looking to win, but he wants to score a knockout win against the reigning pound-for-pound king.
Algieri reiterated that a knockout win is possible, considering the fact that Pacquiao has been knocked out in three of his five defeats, which includes a devastating sixth-round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012.
"Manny has five losses and three of them are stoppages," Algieri said when asked about a knockout win. "It's definitely not out of the question. I was saying even with the Provodnikov fight. As good as his chin is, I didn't think a stoppage was out of the question in that fight. I think things changed because of the eye but I don't doubt that if we fought again that a knockout wouldn't be there."
Algieri's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, also expressed confidence that his fighter has a good chance of scoring a huge upset win, saying that it is the reason why they took the Pacquiao fight - not just because of the guaranteed $1 million fight purse.
"I took the Provodnikov fight for one reason and one reason alone - I knew that Chris stacked up pretty well against him and I also knew about the opportunity it provided. Well now for this particular fight, sure it pays good money the Pacquiao fight - but the reality is I'm also taking this fight because of the opportunity it provides and I like the way he stacks up against Manny," DeGuardia said.
