Boxing News 2014: Miguel Cotto Could Face Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez in Next Fight

World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto could face either Gennady Golovkin or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in his next fight in December.

In an interview with BoxingScene, Freddie Roach, Cotto's trainer, said that Alvarez remains on top of their list at this point, but also mentioned Golovkin as a possible opponent.

"HBO signed Golovkin to a six fight deal and they're in love with him. The number one choice for Cotto right now, is we'd like to fight Canelo Alvarez but GGG could be next for us," Golovkin said.

Golovkin emerged as a candidate to face Cotto after the reigning IBO and WBA middleweight champion successfully defended his world titles with a third-round knockout win against Daniel Geale on Saturday at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

When asked about his next opponent, the 32-year-old Kazakh, who holds an impressive 30-0 record with 27 knockouts, did not hesitate to name Cotto as his preferred foe in his next title fight.

"Miguel Cotto. 100%, I respect him, I respect his style. This is the biggest fight for everybody. For TV, for my fans, for everybody. For boxing," Golovkin said.

Golovkin pointed out that he wants a unification bout against Cotto because he is aching to prove that he is the best middleweight fighter in the world today.

"I want to fight him next and prove to the world without a doubt that I'm the best middleweight in the world," Golovkin said via Daily Mail. "That is very important to me."

Tom Loeffler, Golovkin's promoter, also confirmed their interest in facing Cotto, who won the WBC middleweight crown with a dominating win against Sergio Martinez on June 7 in New York.

"It's the biggest name that will get in the ring with him," Loeffler said. "That's our target. Miguel had a victory. He and Gennady Golovkin would be the biggest fight in the Garden and it's a unification fight."
