Soccer Transfer Rumors 2014: Manchester United Boss Louis van Gaal Eyeing Thomas Vermaelen, Mats Hummels

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has had first-hand look on the squad that he inherited from David Moyes, and the new boss at Old Trafford already has some plans in mind.

Van Gaal, who took over after the club parted ways with Moyes following a disastrous campaign last season, said that he is looking to strike balance in his squad and is reportedly eyeing Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels.

"Van Gaal will look to address the imbalance in his squad by signing at least two players over the next three weeks -- rumored to be Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels," ESPN FC reported.

Vermaelen could be a realistic target for Manchester United after the 28-year-old defender only had seven English Premier League appearances for Arsenal last season.

Hummels, on the other hand, could be a significant addition to the squad that is looking to boost its defensive line. The 25-year-old German had two goals and two assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances last season and also netted two goals in six 2014 FIFA World Cup games for Germany.

Van Gaal has a lot of quality players at his disposal, but he insisted that he needs to make moves to have a better chance of enjoying success next season.

"When you look at the squad, there is quality. There is (Wayne) Rooney, (Robin) van Persie, (Javier) Hernandez, (Danny) Welbeck, but you also see Juan Mata, (Marouane) Fellaini, and you see (Ander) Herrera. There are a lot of players that can play in the same position," van Gaal said. "It is not in balance. It's more difficult to succeed in a difficult situation than in a fantastic situation."

Van Gaal recently introduced the 3-4-1-2 system in Manchester United's preseason games. The 62-year-old manager said that he is still planning to use his usual 4-3-3 formation, but he admitted that he also needs to find quality wing backs to make it work.

"I buy players to improve my selection," van Gaal said. "First I have to see what we need in all the positions from the system we shall play. When we play 4-3-3 I shall use more or less the same players but 4-3-3 I need more specialists on the wings and more attackers."
