Boxing News 2014: Freddie Roach Prefers Canelo Alvarez Than Gennady Golovkin in Miguel Cotto’s Next Fight

Gennady Golovkin recently called out Miguel Cotto, but the reigning IBO and WBA middleweight champion may not get his wish for his next fight.

ESPN boxing insider Dan Rafael reported that that the proposed Cotto-Golovkin title unification bout is highly-unlikely at this point because trainer Freddie Roach prefers Canelo Alvarez for the Puerto Rican's next fight in December.

Top Rank Promotions chief Bob Arum also reiterated that the fight against Alvarez is the more logical option for Cotto because of its marketability compared to a fight against Golovkin, who has yet to show strong pay-per-view potential despite having a perfect 30-0 record with 27 knockouts.

"Certainly, it's up to Miguel who he wants to fight but I think the Canelo fight is a much more attractive fight," Arum said via ESPN. "Even though I love Golovkin and [K2 Promotions managing director] Tom Loeffler -- and nobody can say that Golovkin isn't a great fighter -- it's risk-reward in boxing. We don't know about Golovkin's ability on pay-per-view."

The Cotto-Alvarez showdown could be scheduled next year, but Cotto will still fight in December. It is not expected to be against a tough fighter like Golovkin so as not to put the Cotto vs Alvarez fight in serious jeopardy.

Gaby Peñagarícano, Cotto's adviser, said that he was not surprised that Golovkin called Cotto out after winning against Daniel Geale in their title fight on Saturday.

Peñagarícano sounded like there is still hope for a Cotto-Golovkin fight, though, saying that they have yet to talk about their next fight, but they will surely consider GGG as the reigning WBC middleweight champion's opponent in December.

"I saw it on Saturday. Not surprised," Peñagarícano said. "Everyone wants to call out the big names, right? We have not begun to discuss options for the next fight. Probably I will be sitting down with Miguel in the coming days to start planning. It's a fight to consider. I am sure we will be discussing it soon among other options."

Loeffler is still hoping that Cotto's camp will eventually decide to face Golovkin, reiterating that the Cotto-Golovkin showdown is the best option if both parties want a blockbuster in New York before the end of the year.
