A magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Bay Area, California leaves over a hundred injured; and archives as the most powerful quake that rocked Napa area this 2014 in twenty five years.
An earthquake hit the picturesque Napa Wine County in Northern California early Sunday morning. It left over a hundred people injured with three of them in critical condition. Several properties were reportedly damaged including three of the town's historic building.
The earthquake struck four miles northwest of the American Canyon town in Napa County and is the most powerful the San Francisco Bay Area has experienced this 2014 since in the late '80s. Earlier back then, specifically in 1989, the Bay Area was also hit by the strongest quake measuring 6.9 magnitudes which resulted in 63 casualties, 3,757 injuries and an estimated $6 billion property damages.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake in Bay Area struck at 3:20 am local time at a distance of 6.7 miles, which stunned several sleeping Californians awake. No fatalities caused by the earthquake have been documented this 2014.
Power outages, gas and water leaks have also been reported. Almost 77,000 Californian residents had experienced no power in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. 15 buildings were estimated to have been declared red tagged or said to be unsafe to enter.
Some residents reportedly said that the earthquake lasted only for fifty five seconds; however they felt it for what seemed like fifty five minutes. Several aftershocks have been reported following the earthquake.
Authorities said that the clean-up operations start on Monday. In the meanwhile, California Governor Jerry Brown announced a state of emergency in the counties of Napa, Solano and Sonoma. Classes were also suspended in Napa Valley on Monday.
The destruction from Sunday's Bay Area earthquake tremors was comparably minor compared with the misshapen highways and damaged homes that scattered the Bay Area in the aftermath of the quake 25 years ago.
After the assessment of Sunday earthquake's aftermath, Californian residents were grateful that no casualties have been recorded although $1 billion economic loss will be likely expected this third quarter of 2014.
