Phil Robertson is an American professional hunter, a businessman and a reality television star who starred on the popular television series Duck Dynasty. He is also introduced on the television show Buck Commander, Outdoor Channel's hunting program.
In high school Phil Robertson is an athlete and was all-state in football, baseball and track. He attended Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship in the '60s. He played first string quarterback for the Bulldogs. However, he turned down a prospect to play professionally with the Washington Redskins.
Phil Robertson's talent on playing football was promising and had the potential for a pro career but he was more interested in duck hunting. When Paul Harvey of the Washington Redskins approached to recruit him to play professionally for the team, he declined because football conflicted with his hunting. And football was only holding up his scholarship for him.
Phil Robertson gave up his leading football quarterback position to first overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft, Terry Bradshaw. Phil thought that while his football scholarship was holding up for him, Terry practically lived and breathed the sport. Phil even stated: "Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks."
After giving up football, Phil Robertson later received his bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's in education. He initially spent several years teaching before becoming a profitable fisherman. But as a keen duck hunter, Phil was discontented with the condition of duck calls.
Phil Robertson started his experimentation with making a call that would produce the precise sound of a duck. So in 1972, he invented his first Duck Commander call. He received a patent and the company was incorporated a year later.
To this day, the Duck Commander Company is a multi-million dollar business and is headed by Phil's son Willie Robertson. So it seems that Phil Robertson never regretted giving up his football career to Terry Bradshaw because his true calling is in duck hunting and in business; it is what really made him a phenomenal success.
