The showdown between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Miguel Cotto is expected to generate big pay-per-view numbers, and for Gabriel Peñagarícano, Cotto's adviser, the fight will happen soon.
Cotto previously turned down a $10 million offer to face Alvarez earlier this year, but Peñagarícano said that the fight will eventually happen since both camps are aware of how big the showdown could be.
Since turning down a deal to face Alvarez, Cotto's stock improved significantly as he became the World Boxing Council middleweight champion with an impressive win against Sergio Martinez in June.
"Miguel is interested in big fights. And the big fights have a name called pay-per-view. Back when this fight was first discussed, it was perhaps too early. Canelo had never headlined on pay-per-view. Now he's already had two pay-per-views and they yielded decent results," Peñagarícano said.
"If a fight would happen now it would be very successful. This is something that can happen in the not too distant future," Peñagarícano said.
Golden Boy Promotions, who handles the career of Alvarez, and Top Rank Promotions, who holds promotional rights for Cotto's fights, have expressed willingness to stage the fight next after both fighters fight in one more tune-up match.
GBP president Oscar De La Hoya recently said that Alvarez will return to action in December before fighting again in May, possibly on Cinco De Mayo weekend, which has been occupied by fights involving Floyd Mayweather Jr. over the past three years.
"Canelo Alvarez gave me my marching orders and that is fighting in May of next year and September of next year so, as his promoter, I have to do whatever I can to make that happen for him," De La Hoya said via BoxingScene. "If Canelo wants to fight in May, I will get him May, if I have to fight for it."
Alvarez, who won against Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara in his last two fights, will go up against Joshua Clottey on December 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Cotto, on the other hand, was also supposed to fight in December, but was forced to move his next fight date to early next year due to Freddie Roach's busy schedule with Manny Pacquiao.
