Floyd Mayweather Next Fight: Gennady Golovkin Will Knockout ‘Money’ In Potential Showdown, Says GGG’s Trainer

Gennady Golovkin is being mentioned as one of the possible opponents of Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year. And if the fight happens, Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, is convinced that his fighter will win convincingly.

Sanchez said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio that no fighter in the junior middleweight and middleweight division can stop Golovkin, including Mayweather.

Sanchez said that if Golovkin gets a shot against Mayweather, the fight won't go the distance because the 32-year-old knockout artist will stop the reigning pound-for-pound king out, but it will be more difficult that their recent second-round stoppage win against Marco Antonio Rubio last week.

"I think that Gennady would stop him," Sanchez said. "I don't think he would stop him like he did with Rubio, Floyd Mayweather is a heck of a fighter. Floyd Mayweather has proven that every time somebody speaks up, he shuts them up. He has 47 fights that he has won."

"We can talk all we want but until he steps in the ropes and we have to deal with Floyd, we'll find out. I am confident that Gennady stops him within twelve rounds, of course it's gonna be a lot work, it's gonna be difficult but I think that he does," Sanchez said.

Sanchez pointed out that Golovkin is different from Mayweather's previous opponents like Marcos Maidana and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez because the Kazakh has all the tools to put the unbeaten champion in trouble.

"I think Golovkin is big enough to make Floyd fight a different fight that Maidana was not able to do," Sanchez said. "I don't think Canelo lived up to what the Mexicans expected from Canelo when he fought Mayweather, so Golovkin is maybe the guy that they're looking for to brand the best ever, as Floyd Mayweather keeps calling himself, to see if he is the best ever and who knows, he may be."

And as for the potential financial numbers for the fight, Sanchez also expressed confidence that a Mayweather-Golovkin showdown will generate huge pay-per-view numbers.

Golovkin, who holds an impressive 31-0 record with 28 knockouts, is the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion. He also became the interim World Boxing Council middleweight champion after winning against Rubio.
