Gennady Golovkin wants a shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015, but Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya is convinced that GGG won't get a shot against 'Money.'
De La Hoya said in an interview with BoxingScene that Golovkin won't get his wish of facing Mayweather in a big-money bout next year. While he did not say it directly, De La Hoya sounded like he is convinced that Mayweather won't take the risk of facing Golovkin.
Golovkin, the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion, holds an impressive 31-0 record with 28 of his victories coming by way of knockout.
While he is convinced that Mayweather won't give Golovkin a shot, De La Hoya is quite sure that the GGG will get big fights in the near future - possibly against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Alvarez is currently focused on getting a fight against Cotto, but De La Hoya reiterated that a showdown between Canelo and Golovkin is more realistic than the rumored Golovkin-Mayweather bout.
"It will never happen, let's put it that way. One fight that most likely will happen, who is willing to take the challenge - is Triple G vs. Canelo," De La Hoya said. "They have sparred many times before. In time, I am very optimistic that [Canelo-GGG] will happen - given time and once Canelo is ready to move up 160 and he gets a little older. He just turned 24, so he's got time. All of those dangerous fights Canelo is willing to take."
Golovkin successfully defended his world titles against Marco Antonio Rubio, whom he knocked out in the second round of their showdown earlier this month at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, recently expressed confidence that GGG will score a convincing knockout win against Mayweather should the reigning pound-for-pound king agrees to face the 32-year-old Kazakh next year.
"I think that Gennady would stop him," Sanchez said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio. "I don't think he would stop him like he did with Rubio, Floyd Mayweather is a heck of a fighter. Floyd Mayweather has proven that every time somebody speaks up, he shuts them up. He has 47 fights that he has won."
