On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denounced the global responses over Gaza and Syria crises. He also emphasized the significance of discussing the concerns women face on a national and international level within the matter of justice.
At the Women and Democracy Association's First International Women and Justice Summit in Istanbul on Monday, Nov. 24, President Erdoğan spoke about the human rights violation protests in some nations and the anti-seal hunting protests were nothing compared to the tragedies experienced in Gaza and Syria.
"You see that those who make a global issue out of the hunting of seals do not show the slightest sensitivity toward the massacre of thousands of women and children in Syria and Gaza," President Erdoğan said in his speech. "More than 300,000 people have been killed in Syria but there is still no reaction from the world. I talk to them [world leaders] but I get no response."
The seal hunting comments of the president came after the controversial statements of a Turkish businessman. Todays Zaman reported the entrepreneur said his company holds over 80 percent of the seal fur trade in the world.
Meanwhile, President Erdoğan stressed the importance of discussing the violence experienced by women and children in Gaza and Syria in his speech. The Middle East Monitor said he added that the society faced problems and issues related to humans and humanity but regrettably, did not put a fair and comprehensive approach on those concerns.
In his speech, President Erdoğan highlighted that those who have been affected by the thousands killed in Palestine, Gaza and Syria have showed no interest in the deaths.
"[They] did not show any interest, even a little, all they were interested in is oil," the president stated. "A person cannot become honest and fair if he did not deal with children and women who are killed in Syria and Palestine, with the same care and attention as the defense of environmental problems."
Aside from the Gaza and Syria crises, President Erdoğan also denounced the coup that ousted former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi last year. The president recalled that in August 2013, 3,000 Morsi supporters were massacred in Egypt. He stressed no former Egyptian leaders had done the same brutality.
