Christmas 2014 Holiday Decorations: Tips for Safety, Experts Advice on Christmas Lights

President of the company Christmas Décor Nikos Phelps, an expert in exterior lighting decoration has shared some tips based on his years of experience in the business, Penn Live reported.

Phelps has been in the business for 10 years. The professional decorator started the Christmas projects last September and shared helpful tips for the holidays.

First thing to do is to research about the right set of clips and light to use. Phelps suggested that it is better to do it online with the look, lifespan and safety as your top priorities.

LED lights are a little expensive but last longer than incandescent lights. The light strings can be connected easily compared to traditional ones. Choose a product that has been tested by and independent laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratory, CBS Detroit reported.

Planning early is also an advantage. "If you're looking to buy a lot of professional things now, a lot of them are sold out already. Christmas Décor usually purchases things around August and September," Phelps said.

In the midst of planning, safety should be kept in mind. While decorating your home, make sure to avoid falls and accidents. This can be done by planning beforehand the extent of your lighting decoration.

Another important tip is following the electrical limitations of your home. "Follow the power rules. Follow the electrical requirements so that you're not overloading circuits," Phelps recommended.

Inspect the lights you are going to use, look for broken bulbs, tangled wires and damaged sockets. The decorator must return or replace malfunctioning lights to avoid fires. Aside from the lights, buy proper clips and inspect it also.

For lights on Christmas trees, make sure that you have a fire alarm nearby and a fire extension ready. Researching about the tree that you are going to purchase whether artificial or natural is important. Ornaments must also be fire-proof, according to WDRB.

Finally, make sure to turn off the lights. A timer may come in handy or an extension cord with a foot switch is also a good option.

Nikos Phelps of Christmas Décor offers landscaping services aside from Christmas lights installation.
