AMC revealed that a "Walking Dead" spinoff is in the works entitled "Cobalt," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

AMC has shared the details of an upcoming "The Walking Dead" spin off, which will be a prequel for the hit show. The "companion" series has the working title "Cobalt."

The spinoff will take place at Los Angeles, where the zombie apocalypse has started. In the comics where the show was based, the origin of the apocalypse was never revealed.

AMC President Charlie Collier has acknowledged the fact that the fans are curious about what happened to the other parts of the world since the focus is on "The Walking Dead" Atlanta group, according to We Got This Covered.

"Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead (which is set in Atlanta), fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world," Collier said.

The upcoming show will focus on a new group of survivors other than the Atlanta characters. There will be six people consisting of two small families and a loner who will struggle to save their lives at the dawn of the apocalypse.

As with the main show, the group members may increase or decrease depending on the circumstances they face. AMC has revealed the new cast ensemble.

Cliff Curtis will play as teacher Sean Cabrera who has a son with his former wife. Curtis will play a good guy who is trying to make things right with the people he love.

Nancy Tomkins will be the name of the female lead role but the crew is still testing actresses for the part. Tomkins will be a guidance counselor in the series.

Frank Dillan who played the young Voldemort in "Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince" will star as Tomkins' son Nick. The young man battles a drug addiction in the story. Tomkins' ambitious daughter Ashley will be portrayed by Alycia Debnam Carey.

AMC is still finalizing the actors for the supporting cast in "The Walking Dead" prequel.  The spinoff will be written and produced by the show's creator Robert Kirkman and David Erickson, Business 2 Community reported.
