Hot Air Balloon Accident: 1 Tourist Killed, 8 Other Injured After Hot Air Balloons Crash-Land In Turkey

Hot Air Balloon Accident - A Chinese tourist has been killed and many others people were seriously injured after two hot air balloons crash-landed in Turkey's historical region of Cappadocia.

The accidents incidentally occurred around the same time on Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. in the central Turkish region of Nevsehir, which is famous for its colorful views, "fairy chimney" rock formations and caves.

Turkish media reports have identified the Chinese national, who is the sole causality of the accident, as 23-year-old Tang Yi. Yi is said to have died instantly following the crash.

At least 10 others victims of the hot air balloon crash were transported to the hospital after some suffered from fractures and broken bones. Two Malaysian tourists are said to have incurred serious injuries and remain in critical condition.  

The identities of the others involved in the accidents have not been disclosed. However, reports indicate that apart from other Chinese and Malaysian tourists aboard the hot balloons, three Turks, including a pilot, were also involved in the accident. 

The Governor of Nevsehir Mehmet Ceylan said an investigation into the cause of the hot air balloon accident was underway. Preliminary reports shows that the balloons crash-landed in the Karasag region, when strong winds were present.

Turkish authorities say both hot air balloons, which were operated by private companies, crash-landed after a sudden blast of wind forced them to land in the Guvercinlik Valley. They had taken off from Goreme in the Nevsehir province in Central Anatolia.

Local reports indicate that the balloon, which Yi was aboard, was affected by strong currents and drifted about 150 meters off course before it suddenly crash-landed.

Hot air balloon rides are a very popular tourist activity in Turkey, many visitors are drawn by the historical and picturesque views of the country. The Cappadocia region, which is also a UNESCO site, is a particular favorite among tourist. About 190 hot air balloons operate in the regions and there have been some accidents although it is quite rare.

Reports indicate that in May 2013, three Brazilian tourists lost their lives after two balloons clashed in mid-air. A British tourist was also killed a crash in 2009.
