Bobby Petrino was fired by Arkansas Tuesday in the wake of a motorcycle crash last week that exposed an affair the football coach had with a 25-year-old employee of the University of Arkansas' athletic department.
Though Petrino was a fan favorite at the helm of the Razorbacks' football team who led his squad to back-to-back 21-5 records the last two years, he was unable to escape his lies and improprieties that were exposed last week.
Petrino was placed on administrative leave on Thursday shortly after his April 1 motorcycle crash went public. Petrino initially claimed that he had been by himself at the time of his crash, and said so both in public and on an official university press release, but when the police report came out, it showed that he had been with Jessica Dorrell, a 25-year-old newly-hired administrative staff member in the Razorbacks organization.
The termination was announced Tuesday evening by Arkansas' Athletic Director Jeff Long, who had met repeatedly with Petrino earlier that day, according to a number of reports, including one by Arkansassports360.com. The website reported that Petrino's son Bobby tweeted "so p---ed" earlier Tuesday, presumably because of the news of his father's firing, but that the tweet was not available later Tuesday evening.
Bobby Petrino, a 51-year-old who had a 34-17 career record as head coach of Arkansas for the last four years, had been on paid leave since Thursday, but it appears he was unable to make amends with the program, after allegations emerged that he had hired Dorrell in part because of their relationship, rather than solely based on her qualifications.
Long has said he will keep assistant coaches in place for now, then begin the search for a coach at the end of spring practices, according to ESPN.
