Yoji Asano: 2011 American Idol Contestant Arrested For Rape Charges

Yoji Asano - A 29-year-old Japanese singer, who became popular after his hilarious performance at the 2011 American Idols auditions, has been charged with rape.

Yoji Asano (a.k.a Yoji Pop) was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 12 and transported to Riker's Island, where he spent the Valentine weekend. Asano has been charged with attempted rape and attempted sexual abuse. He was released on Monday after he posted a bail of $2,500. Asano has a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Asano's accuser, a 25-year-old New York woman, reportedly told the cops that the singer attempted to forcibly have sex with her in Aug. 2014. She was reportedly letting him spend the night in her Stuyvesant apartment when Asano tried to force himself on her. There are contradicting reports of what actually happened.

According to the NY Daily News, Asano, who was sleeping on a couch in the woman's apartment, crept into her bedroom in the night and attempted to force himself on her. He later ran away after the victim fought him off.

But the New York Post had a slightly different version of the incident. According to the Post, Asano threw the victim on her bed, held her down and attempted to forcibly have sex with her. He reportedly backed off after the victim pleaded with him that he was hurting her. The report says he developed "cold feet" and went to drink some wine in the kitchen.

Asano, whose main musical influence is admittedly Michael Jackson, chose to perform Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA when he auditioned for American Idols in 2011. Although he wasn't accepted into the show, his performance made him an internet sensation. Asano is one of the contestants who performed at Amateur Night at the Apollo last year.
