Tammy Meyers - Police in Las Vegas say a 44-year-old woman, who was shot dead in front of her home minutes after a road rage confrontation with an unknown driver, went looking for him with a gun.
Authorities revealed on Tuesday that Tammy Meyers was teaching her 15-year-old daughter how to drive in a school's parking lot when they were involved in an altercation with the driver of silver or gray four-door sedan.
The incident happened on Thursday night, and the unknown driver must have said something that scared Meyers and her daughter that they abandoned the lessons for the day and drove straight home.
Police say after returning home, Meyers called her 22-year-old son, who had a gun, the pair went looking for the driver. After a while they found the gray or silver sedan and followed it for about 10 minutes before returning home.
Shortly after reaching home around 11:22 p.m., the same car drove into their cul-de-sac and shots ran-out. Meyers' son returned fire with a gun registered to him and the car fled.
Meyers suffered gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital where she died two days later after being taken off life support.
"I did what I had to do to protect my family. Everyone can think what they have to think, I did it for a reason. And I'd do it for anyone I love," Meyers' son Brandon said at a vigil.
'My mother was a very strong woman...She was a kind woman," he said. "She didn't deserve this."
Lt. Ray Steiber of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Meyers was driving when the car sped by and her daughter honked the horn at the driver.
"She was getting a driving lesson. So she figured that this person was speeding and they needed to be corrected," Steiber said. "I would never say that anybody went looking for trouble, but unfortunately I can't ask Tammy what was in her mind at the time of her actions."
"At this point in time, Tammy is a victim...It's out obligation as a community and a law enforcement organization to ensure that everyone is safe, regardless of what our personal opinions are on certain people's actions."
Authorities are still looking for suspect in the silver or gray sedan. Meanwhile, they have called the shooting an "isolated incident involving road rage that ended in a tragic murder."
The driver is described as a white male in his 20s, about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with "dirty blonde hair worn in a spiked style' and hazel or blue eyes.
Homicide investigators are still investigating the crime and are reviewing additional video evidence.
