Leonardo DeCaprio Billy Milligan: Leonardo DeCaprio To Play Criminal With Multiple Personalities In New Movie

Leonardo DeCaprio Billy Milligan - Multiple award winning actor Leonardo DeCaprio may be set to put up one of the most compelling performances of his career when he plays Billy Milligan, an Ohio native who was tried for armed robbery and raping three women in the 70s but was acquitted after pleading insanity due to his multiple-personality disorder.

Milligan, who is said to have had up to 24 different personalities, is the first person to have successfully used multiple-personality disorder as a defense in court.

The Crowded Room, which is reportedly being produced by New Regency and DeCaprio's Appian Way, will be based on Daniel Keyes award winning book about Milligan, The Minds of Billy Milligan. DeCarpio is currently working with New Regency on The Revenant, which deals with the story of a fur trapper who sets out to take revenge on his companions, who tried to kill him.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeCarpio has wanted to play Milligan since 1997. Although New Regency has reportedly had the intention of making The Minds of Billy Milligan for about a decade now, somehow the project never kicked off.

DeCarpio will produce The Minds of Billy Milligan alongside Alexandra Milchan and Jenifer Davisson. My Own Worst Enemy creator Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg, who worked on Arms and the Dudes, have both been hired to work on the script.

Milligan's trial is considered a ground breaking trial by experts in both legal and medical circles. His attorney's successfully argued that 2 of Milligan's personalities committed the crimes he was being accused of without his knowledge. Although he was not given prison time, Milligan spent up to a decade in mental hospitals.

Milligan died in a nursing home in Ohio in December 2014 at the age of 59.
