Street Racer Surrenders: Henry Gevorgyan Charged With Murder After Turning Himself In To LAPD

Street Racer Surrenders - A 21-year-old man who lost control of his vehicle and killed 2 people while racing in Chatsworth this past week has been booked into jail and charged with murder.

Henry Gevorgyan turned himself in to the police on Saturday after officials implored him to do so saying "it's just a matter of time before we get you."

While racing in the popular street racing area in San Fernando Valley sometime after 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, Gevorgyan lost control of his gray Ford Mustang and spun 180 degrees before hitting a crowd of spectators on the sidewalk. Reports indicate that the car then hit a berm and a utility pole before coming to a stop.

Two victims of the accident have since died. A third victim, who reportedly suffered serious injuries, is said to be in a stable condition. The scene of the crash was covered in skid marks. Officials say the force of the impact sent one of the victims flying into a nearby parking lot.

A video of the incident obtained by ABC shows that Gevorgyan had just started the race when he lost control and plunged into the crowd. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the race - a Nissan GTR - has not been identified and is yet to come forward.

Gevorgyan and the other driver reportedly escaped from the scene after the accident. Police say up to 60 people - including the victims - had been there to watch the race.

Street racing is growing in popularity in Los Angeles. But police say that it is illegal. "Street racing, all too often, is publicized as glamorous entertainment, and here's a case where street racing is criminal, dangerous..." LAPD Capt. John McMahon said after the accident.

Los Angeles City Council Member Mitch Englander is set to propose stiffer penalties for people caught engaging in street racing and the drivers of cars involved in hit-and-run accidents.

"These cars out there, these speed racers, they're fast and I'm furious," Englander said.
