Tom Cruise to Fight Drones in 'Top Gun' Sequel

Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role in the sequel of his classic hit "Top Gun", a feat 29 years in the making, but instead of fighting pilots, he will be fighting drones.

He will reprise the role of Naval Pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the role that ushered him into Hollywood fame and into every woman's heart. The actor has long expressed his interest to reprise his role as the gutsy and handsome pilot, and has said that he would love to fly the newer jets, adding that flying them would be insane.

This time around, Cruise, 52, will be bringing dogfighting to a much different level where drones are the target and not fighter pilots in aircrafts.

According to Broadway World, the new screenplay for the much-awaited sequel to the 1980s hit "Top Gun" will be written by Justin Marks, who wrote "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li".

Producer David Ellison told TIME that the movie sequel will explore the end of the dogfighting era between manned and remotely-operated aircraft.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today."

Ellison further added to the press in Berlin during the latest Terminator movie that "Top Gun 2" will present today's culture, where drone technology is widely and significantly used by the U.S. Air Force in almost all of its operations and its impact to the so-called dogfighting days as seen in the original movie.

"We are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak," Ellison told RollingStone.
