‘Warcraft’ Plot, Spoilers & Release Date: Film Adaptation To Show History Of Humans And Orcs; Movie’s Sequels Already Planned

Duncan Jones, director of the upcoming "Warcraft" movie adaption, revealed that the film will shed light on the history behind the human and orc characters.

Based on Blizzard Entertainment's popular online multiplayer video game series, the first parts of the film will establish how these two factions met. Then, according to Jones, the movie will show how the ongoing war affects those who are involved.

This means the film will have two protagonists: Sir Anduin Lothar of the humans' Alliance Steadfast and Durotan, chief of Frostwolf orc clan. These two characters will respectively be played by Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbel.

For Jones, portraying the rich lore of "Warcraft" this way will give audiences, even those who are not followers of the game series, a clear understanding of the story.

"The plan was to start our film with the first time Orcs met Humans," Jones told Collider. "I think that for a world with so much newness to explain, this was a wise choice, especially when so many people in our audience may not know anything about 'Warcraft.'"

"'Warcraft' should be about heroes on both sides trying to avoid conflict, when villains leave them no choice," he added.

According to a different report by Den of Geek U.S., it seems the story behind these two groups will be developed even further in future films. Jones noted that after working closely with Chris Metzen, Blizzard's senior vice president of Storytelling and Franchise Development, the two have already found a way to stretch the project into a trilogy.

Jones said that he already has an idea of how the stories of "Warcraft 2" and "Warcraft 3" will progress based on the upcoming film.

The "Warcraft" film adaptation is set to debut on June 10, 2016. Aside from the two actors mentioned above, the film stars Ben Foster, Paula Patton, Dominic Cooper and Rob Kazinsky.

The project was first announced in 2006 and has been in production since 2013 after Jones signed on to helm the film. According to producer Thomas Tull of Legendary pictures, the movie was supposed to come out this year but the studio decided to delay its release in order to make way for another big-budget movie, Crossmap reported.

Tull noted that "Warcraft" will have a better chance of becoming a blockbuster hit if it doesn't premiere during the same time as "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," which will hit theaters on Dec. 18.
