Kim Kardashian is making headlines once again but not because of her naked pregnant selfie. And since everything she does create so much noise, her recent drug promotions on social media caught the eye of the feds. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the 34-year-old reality star violated the federal drug-promotion rules after endorsing a prescription pill on Instagram.
Having spent the better part of the last decade in the public eye, Kim Kardashian is no stranger to criticisms. But the latest negative publicity regarding FDA's warning definitely took the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star by surprise. According to ABC News, Kardashian's promotion of a prescription drug to treat morning sickness on her social media accounts such as Instagram and Facebook violate the rules for promoting drugs because of omitting to mention the drug's side effects.
"I tried changing things about my lifestyle, like my diet, but nothing helped, so I talked to my doctor," Kardashian's post stated. "He prescribed me #Diclegis, and I felt a lot better and most importantly, it's been studied and there was no increased risk to the baby."
Since Kim Kardashian's photo of a pill bottle of Diclegis, which is made by Duchesnay USA, drew the attention of the FDA, the federal regulators ordered the company to take it down as stated in a letter issued on Aug. 7, Washington Post has learned.
"The social media post is false or misleading in that it presents efficacy claims for DICLEGIS, but fails to communicate any risk information," the letter stated.
It also noted that the drug's label, which describes its approved uses including important limitations on the use of the drug was neglected by Kim Kardashian to bring up online. The drug hasn't been studied in women with a rare complication of pregnancy that causes extreme morning sickness and is not recommended at all for women sensitive to various drugs.
Diclegis is prescribed to women who don't respond to more conservative measures to address morning sickness, such as eating more small meals or bland foods. As per Bloomberg, the drug is controversial because an earlier version of the compound known as Bendectin was recalled from the U.S. market in 1983 over fears that it could cause birth defects.
Meanwhile, Duchesnay spokeswoman Laney Landsman said that Kim Kardashian is a paid spokeswoman for the company and confirmed that the social media posts were removed immediately.
"Duchesnay is working very hard to take quick action in responding to the FDA's letter and are working out a plan to submit to the FDA," Landsman said.
The FDA warning over Kim Kardashian's drug promotions on Instagram came as her naked pregnant selfie stirred some buzz on social media, E! News noted.
