Olympics 2012: Life Lessons

From watching the 2012 Olympics, one may wonder how is it even possible that humans can possess such amazing strengths and attributes to compete in such games. As athletes compete against one another in attempts to win a gold medal for their country, viewers should take note as to how the diligence, determination, and perseverance of these super humans can be applied to their own lives.

1)      Passion

Decide what it is you want to do with your life. As children, everyone typically has dreams of becoming a doctor, lawyer, or doing something famous. These dreams usually change as we grow, mature and begin to understand the world on different levels. However, no matter where or how we are raised, having an idea of what you want to do with the rest of your life is the beginning and most important factor.

2)      Sacrifice

Olympic athletes training sessions can be time consuming. Years of practicing  for a specific sport or competition may sometimes seem repetitive, however it is necessary in order to achieve greatness. Knowing when to say no and when to let go are essential factors when chasing after a certain goal or goals. Life is filled with distractions, some good some bad but knowing when to say no, and remaining focused during times when you would much rather be engaging in something more pleasurable can be the determining factor on the outcome  of your accomplishment.

3)      Discipline

Michael Phelps's swimming abilities took years for him to master. People are born with natural talents, but even natural talents must be practiced and perfected in time. Disciplining one's self to stick something out can be a very difficult task. No one said achieving your goals would be easy. Doubts, fatigue, second thoughts and quitting may sometimes seem to be an easier route. Disciplining yourself on certain aspects of your life that will increase your willingness, drive and determination will prove beneficial in the years to come.

4)      Cooperate

Like the Olympic relay teams, working together for the same goal and accepting help from others can prove to be very valuable. Realizing that you cannot do everything yourself is a very mature step in the right direction. Accepting help and constructive criticism can some sometimes negatively affect your pride. Building thick skin and knowing that people are simply trying to help you does not always happen overnight. There will be people whose intentions are not always best. Staying open minded, having good judgment and the readiness to give a helping hand as well as receive one will be an extra leap in your chase for success.

5)      Humbleness

After your dreams, goals and aspirations are all met and achieved, you may want to share your story, tips and advice with other people who are following your footsteps. Learning how to speak about your accomplishments without sounding as if you are bragging is very important. Athletes that remain humble after the accomplishments of their goals are highly favored by their fans and people alike, because the public feels that they can relate to them. Remember, your success was not overnight, however that is just how fast you can lose it if you begin to no longer relate to the people you used to resemble.
