'Avatar 2': 3 Things To Expect When James Cameron Drops Sequel To Blockbuster Franchise

"Avatar 2" won't hit theaters until 2017, but reports and rumors are running amuck about this James Cameron flick. Below are three things about the upcoming sequel to "Avatar," the 2009 epic sci-fi that raked in $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

1. A new filming technology

After nailing the first film and putting it in the history of the most successful movies of all time, James Cameron wants to come up with a sequel that will use an even more sophisticated graphics technology that would enable him and the production crew to shoot without setting up greenscreens.

The virtual camera the famous director is using is said to be from Solid Anim, and according to International Business Times, it is a real-time and markless one. The technology will be used not only for "Avatar 2" but also for the two more sequels James Cameron is working on simultaneously.

2. An emotional storyline

Lead actress Zoe Saldana, who plays Neytiri in the alien movie, has revealed to MTV early this year that "Avatar 2" will be a very emotional one. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" star even admitted that the sequel is more emotional than the first installment from the franchise.

"We kind of get choked up. [Cameron] gets emotional telling us about the story. I get emotional hearing about it, so I'm looking forward to it," Saladana said after revealing that the production team worked on a New Zealand studio for three years where the sequels will be filmed.

3. The absence of Trudy

This Monday, "Fast and Furious" actress Michelle Rodriguez revealed that she is not part of "Avatar 2." In an interview with New York Post, Rodriguez said that she is not going to be part of the sequel. "They're bringing back a lot of other characters. I know [Sigourney Weaver's] coming back and the guy who played the bad guy, [Stephen Lang], is coming back. But yeah, I'm not gonna be in it," she was quoted as saying by the news bureau.

While Rodriguez's Trudy Chacon won't be part of the franchise anymore, Sigourney Weaver, whose character named Grace got killed off in the first installment, will be back, but she will be playing a different character. In a guest appearance on "The Jonathan Ross Show," Weaver revealed "I don't play the same character." However, the actress didn't share anything more about her new character. Fans can only wait for more updates to find out Sigourney's new role in the franchise.
