Was Michelle Obama’s $2,300 Worth Blue Dress Too Much For Pope's Visit? [PHOTOS]

Michelle Obama grabbed the opportunity to "dress to impress" Pope Francis when the latter arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Washington on Tuesday. Instead of getting praise for her getup, however, President Barack Obama's wife got some backlash for sporting a not-so-frugal clothing article.

The visit from the Pope, fresh from his trip to Cuba, was a big thing for the people of the United States, especially the media. But while many eyes were glued to the Pope as he went to the White House, there were also those who couldn't help but notice the First Lady's dress that day.

E! News has learned that Michelle Obama wore a midnight blue dress from Monique Lhuillier's Fall 2015 collection. The simple yet elegant dress was a complete standout at the First Family's meeting with Pope Francis, even outplaying her daughters Malia and Sasha's ensembles for the occasion.

According to Daily Mail, while the youngest daughter rocked a $328 patterned skirt, the Obama matriarch got the attention of many on social media since the dress she wore that day was valued at $2,300 - $2,290 to be exact.

Michelle Obama's dress instantly become the subject of backlash among several sites and netizens, with BizPacReview even stating that it was "not very humble" of the First Lady to show up with the very expensive article.

The site also pointed out that Pope Francis, who was praised for dining with the homeless instead of enjoying lunch with the congressional elite this week, couldn't get out of having to meet Michelle in her expensive trappings.

As per BreitBart, the amount of money spent on Michelle Obama's dress was enough to feed more than 80 kids for over a month. The site also slammed not only Michelle but also her family, writing: "This choice obviously is contrary to the values of Pope Francis. But the Obama's religious values come from elsewhere, a divisive and disturbing place, not a charitable or unifying one."

Nevertheless, the site noted that the First Lady does not really need expensive clothing to look good for she is already "a striking woman."
