‘Underworld 5: Next Generation’: Sequel To ‘Underworld Awakening’ Latest News: Release Date, Setting, Cast, Director & More

"Underworld 5" entitled "Underworld: Next Generation," sequel of "Underworld Awakening," has set its big screen release on Oct. 21, 2016. Here is the latest news on the blockbuster vampire-versus-werewolf movie franchise.

"Underworld," despite being judged "tedious and derivative" and given a rather depressing positive rating of only 31 percent in its very first installment as per Rotten Tomatoes, was a blockbuster and has continued to add more chapters in the saga. In fact, the action-horror film series raked in considerable profits in the global box office from the first four films.

After a four-year gap, or more precisely, a year and nine months longer than the gaps between the first four installments, the fifth installment of "Underworld" will finally be released in 2016.

Cosmic Book reported that filming is already in progress for this Screen Gems/Lakeshore Entertainment hit series. "Underworld: Next Generation" is set entirely in Prague, the picturesque capital city of Czech Republic and its surrounding areas.

Kate Beckinsale will be back to reprise her role as Selene, the vampire warrior. It is rumored, however, that this fifth installment of "Underworld" may be Kate Beckinsale's last appearance in the franchise, according to IMDb.

Other actors reported to reprise their roles are: Theo James (more popularly known for his leading role in the "Divergent" series), who played Selene's ally David in "Underworld Awakening," and Charles Dance ("Game of Thrones" star), who played Thomas, the vampire elder.

We can also expect to see new characters in "Underworld 5." Some of the names already noted by Cosmic Book are "Edge of Tomorrow" actress Lara Pulver, who will portray a "fiercely ambitious" vampire; "Outlander" actor Tobias Menzies, who will portray a new Lycan leader; and "Game of Thrones" actor James Faulkner, whose role has yet to be confirmed. Other prominent names who will complete the stellar cast are Peter Andersson from "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," neophyte Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James from the "iZombie" TV series, and Daisy Head from "The Syndicate" TV series.

"Underworld: Next Generation" will also welcome Anna Foerster as a new movie director. Foerster had already debuted her directing skills in hit TV series "Criminal Minds" and "Outlander." Prior to this, she was recognized for her work as a cinematographer on the movie "White House Down."

Foerster will work with executive producer Len Wiseman, who also happens to be a former director for "Underworld;" and Cory Goodman, in charge of writing the screenplay for "Underworld: Next Generation."

Though the plot for the movie is still undisclosed, Christian Post revealed that "Underworld: Next Generation" will turn the spotlight to James, a move that will possibly make him the main character for the succeeding installments of "Underworld," in place of Beckinsale.
