A Million-dollar McLaren Super Car Recalled, Hood can Fly Open While Moving

Ever wanted to own a super car? McLaren, the Formula 1 automotive company, creates the most advanced and competitive sports car around the world. If you do own a McLaren, then you're very lucky but in recent reports, unfortunately, one super car had to be recalled due to a faulty hood.

A recent announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states a recall of McLaren's $1.15 million P1 supercar. Only 375 vehicles were ever produced since 2013. The announcement came after citing a potential road hazzard that can seriously affect safety regulations.

When the car reaches 400 kms per hour, which the McLaren P1 is capable of, it seems the hood can be opened even when the car is moving.

The known U. S. traffic safety agency issued a recall operation of the P1s, a hybrid (electric/gas) 903 horsepower car with Formula 1 technology. NHTSA issued this statement:

If the hood is opened when driving, the risk of accident increases.

In the recall notice, NHTSA explained that the cars have a secondary hood latch that tends to not properly re-engage which then results to accessing releasing the primary latch. The danger then would be the hood opening while the car is still moving. The car is potentially at a greater risk when it hits high speed.

In the United States, 122 McLaren P1s are being recalled. Only one incident was reported wherein the hood opened while the car was in motion. McLaren dealers can install a redesigned hood latch. If you're a P1 owner, you can expect a call from the manufacturer to bring your vehicle to a McLaren dealer for repairs. And if they didn't mention it yet, it's free of charge. The fix is expected to take an hour to be completed by a technician, as told by Noah Joseph.
