Apple has announced that it is voluntarily recalling some AC wall plug adapters designed for use in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Continental Europe, New Zealand and South Korea due to risk of electric shock.
The company claims the risk of electric shock in Apple's affected two-prong wall plug adapters to be active in very rare cases, saying that costumers might have a risk of receiving an electric shock if touched.
The plug adapters at risk were shipped with MacBooks and iPads, and older models of iPhone and iPod, from 2003 to 2015.
AC wall plug adapters designed for use in Canada, Hong Kong, China, United Kingdom, Japan and United States are not affected by this issue. Neither are USB power adapters by Apple.
Even though plugs shipped to UK were not affected, the problem has been discovered in Apple's World Travel Adapter Kit which consists of wall adapters for various regions
Apple is only aware of 12 confirmed occurrences throughout the world. However, no details of these 'incidents' are known; whether it is the discovery of faulty chargers of the incident of customers receiving an electric shock is yet unclear.
Chargers that are affected will be two-pronged adapters, and will have four, five or zero characters on the inside slot that attaches to Apple's main power adapter. If the underside has a country code like AUS or EUR on it, then that is the re-designed version and is not affected. Customers can identify their chargers to see if they are faulty on Apple's official website, apple.com, which has detailed, labeled pictures to make identification easier. There, they can also see details of how to exchange their affected plugs for new ones. Once identified, customers should stop using these affected chargers.
