7 Career Advice No One Tells You

It's the stuff no one tells you that can make all the difference. Here are compilations of career tips no one will actually tell you:

1. Job requirements are negotiable.

Most of us (especially women) will only apply for a gig if we meet all the requirements. However requirements are largely negotiable--you just have to prove that you can bring value to your job.

2. Take Some Time Off If You Have To

You can get to a point of exhaustion where you cannot get up one more day to go to work. This should not be a major alarm. You should not kill yourself because of work and this is a clear sign that you need a break.

3. Study and work in whatever seemingly unrelated areas you are interested in, even if it's just a hobby.

That way, when your dream job/business comes up, you'll be perfectly and uniquely qualified for it. Don't pick a career based on "average salaries" or employment number either. When you're striving to be great at what you do, the "averages" don't matter.

4. Your boss matters more than your company.

Having the right mentor is the real key." says career advice writer Raghav Haran." Not only will you learn a ridiculous amount just by being around successful people in your field, you'll also get into their 'inner circle' if you can prove that you're legit. And then you will have more opportunities than ever before."

5. Do not underestimate the power of social rituals.

Always saying no to after-work drinks shouldn't affect your career, but it probably will

6. Your main goal at work should be to learn and contribute.

Success and promotion will follow from there.

7. As an employee, you are essentially a small business of one.

"Your employer is the customer, and you must focus on how to increase your skills to be more desirable " says David Osborne, President & Founder at Simmetry Solutions
