Aviminus, a bird-like dinosaur, proves that dinosaurs are social animals, reports claim.
Gregory Funston from the University of Alberta said that people usually thinks that dinosaurs are solitary creatures. He said that they think that they just run around and eat everything they could find.
He believes that their findings showed that dinosaurs that are like modern animals that we have today. He explained that they found out that the dinosaurs were social creatures that live-in groups, Science Daily reported.
Funston and his colleagues discovered the remains on Mongolia where they found a bonebed with the bones of Aviminus dinosaurs. Archeologists explained that this is an extremely rare archeological find.
They explained that this is the first evidence of flocking behavior in bird-like dinosaurs. This is not uncommon for modern birds to do this, Phys. Org reported.
Funston explained that they know that the dinosaurs lived together the time they died. The reason why they live together the time they died remains a mystery.
They theorized that this is because of the increased social behavior of the dinosaurs. He explained that by the end of the Cretaceous Period there were dinosaurs who became social.
He explained that they are still looking if this phenomenon is an increasing trend or this is just how the fossils were preserved. He explained that bonebeds are evidence that dinosaurs lived in groups.
The researchers explained that this is the first time they found Aviminus bonebeds. They explained that bonebeds were rate in the Jurassic and Triassic period but they were rampant during the Cretaceous period.
Funston believes that aside from this discovery it is also important that people become aware of fossil poaching. He said that poaching hinders their scientific research.
It can be remembered that last year actor Nicolas Cage returned a Tarbosaurus skill after he found out it was pouched. Funston stressed that without a buyer fossil poaching will seize to exist.
