Mall of America Is Looking For Someone To Live There And Write About It

Ever wished that you could live inside a mall? Imagine the possibilities—having meals at different restaurants and fast food chains every day, browsing to your heart’s content, and running into different people each day.

Now, that dream can be a reality for one lucky person as Mall of America, the largest mall in the United States, is looking for someone to live there and write about it. Best of all, that person gets paid $2,500 to do so.

As part of its 25th-anniversary celebration, Mall of America is holding a Writer-in-Residence contest which will give one special person the chance to spend five days deeply immersed in the mall’s atmosphere while writing about their experience.

According to the Mall of America’s official website, the application is open to everyone from all writing backgrounds and levels of experience. Only legal residents of the United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 years or older at the time of entry are eligible to enter the competition.

25 semi-finalists will be selected from the first round of applications and will be judged on creativity and skill. The semi-finalists will have the opportunity to expand on their story idea in an essay.

The contest winner will stay in an attached hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota for 4 nights. He or she will also receive a gift card of $400 to buy food and drinks at the mall throughout the week and an honorarium of $2,500 “for the sweat and tears they’ll put into their prose.”

During the winner’s time as Writer-in-Residence, the contest winner’s workspace will be located at in a common area space within Mall of America. He or she will be required to be at the mall from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and needs to be physically present at the writer’s desk for no fewer than four hours a day. The rest of the Writer-in-Residence’s time can be spent exploring the mall, posting on social media, and eating.

To apply, visit the application page here before March 10, 2017.
