'Doctor Strange' Bags $232 Million In Domestic Run

Marvel’s latest superhero origin movie has finished its North American run. It garnered more than $200 million in the domestic box office and nearly $700 million globally.

CBR reports that “Doctor Strange” bagged $677.6 million worldwide and $232.6 million in the domestic box office. Comicbook attributes its success to its $85 million opening weekend, calling it an “impressive feat” given the fact that it was a new film that did not have any established characters.

Putting “Doctor Strange” in perspective alongside other Marvel films, it landed at number 9 domestically, in between “Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” writes CBR. The top-grossing film in North America remains to be “The Avengers” with earned $623 million.

CBR goes on to report that compared to other releases in 2016, “Doctor Strange” was the 13th highest-grossing film at the domestic box office. The film received a lot of positive reviews.

Sean Axmaker calls it “a well-told story” with a “well-tuned sense of humor about itself.” It sets itself apart from other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its supernatural themes.

Pete Vonder Haar from the Houston Press says that it is watchable and “surprisingly humorous” amidst the recent Marvel films which have been repetitive. He finds that it is also the closest thing you can get to “tripping balls in a Disney movie,” with its special effects being faithful to its source material.

For some, however, it is the opposite. Christopher Orr from The Atlantic called it the “darkest, dourest offerings of the Marvelverse” and The Globe and Mail’s Barry Hertz finds its storyline “tired and worn, like a facsimile of other, better movies.”

Regardless of those negative reviews, “Doctor Strange’s” box office hit makes a sequel film entirely possible. The sequel was set up with the after credits scene in the film, reports Comicbook.
