There are a lot of speculations that "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is the final installment for the hit CW series. Moreover, Ian Somerhalder may be leaving after this season to focus on his family.

E! News reported that showrunner Julie Plec has started thinking about how the series will wrap up. The co-creator has also decided on an end point for the popular show.

"I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a really good way," Plec said. "As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won't walk away from telling the story."

The "TVD" boss also confirmed that she will work with the actors for the best ending for the show once they decide that they want out. This means that, if Somerhalder and Wesley want to end with "The Vampire Diaries" season 7, this will be the last season for the show.

"When they are ready to be done telling the story, I will put my pencil down and say that I'm done too, and then we will work together to end it in the best way possible," the showrunner added. "There's always things that could go wrong in that scenario, there's always pressure that can be put on; but...the three of us I'd like to think will make the creative decision of when the show should be over."

It was previously reported that Nina Dobrev may return to "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 only if "something catastrophic happens." Also, she is may reprise her role as Elena Gilbert if this season becomes the last installment for the show.

Meanwhile, in an interview with ET, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 cast Ian Somerhalder revealed that he "can't wait" to build his family with wife Nikki Reed. "Well, you know, those are the coolest little things in the world," the actor answered when asked whether fans can expect a new addition to their family.
