Do you think that doing different things all at once can do you good? The answer to that is no. Multitasking is bad for you; it can ruin your performance and can even do you more harm that is why smart individuals do not do it.

It is normal to see someone who seems to be doing everything at the same time. They tend to watch television, do e-mails and even send text messages all at once. These multitaskers want to complete all the task without considering the effects it has on them. Or maybe, they are just not knowledgeable enough of the consequences of their actions.

A research was conducted at Standford University wherein they were able to find out that multitasking can greatly affect once performance. Aside from that, it is also harmful to your health because it can possibly damage your brain. It can cause cognitive impairment.

Social scientists believe that it is impossible for someone to process all information at one time. The brain is not capable of focusing on two things at the same time. You are unlikely to succeed if you do that.

Researchers made some tests between two groups in order to know if multitasking is indeed a gift. The first group is the one who heavily multitasks while the other group is the one who does not multitask. They were able to find out that those heavy multitaskers perform poorly because they easily get distracted by irrelevant information and they have a hard time organizing their thoughts. As for those who do not multitaskers, they did great.

Anthony Wagner, an associate professor of psychology said that “When they’re in situations where there are multiple sources of information coming from the external world or emerging out of memory, they’re not able to filter out what’s not relevant to their current goal.”

According to Entrepreneur, another research was also made at the University of London wherein they found out that multitasking can lower one’s IQ. Those participants who multitasked during the cognitive tasks got lower IQ scores which are said to be similar to those who are smoking marijuana and who stay up all night.

Meanwhile, Jobs & Hire shared that you should never put multitasking on your resume because it will not do good for you and most employees do not appreciate it.
