'Grey's Anatomy' Creator Shonda Rhimes Says Killing Off McDreamy 'Was Not A Difficult One,' Talks Meredith's Transformation & More!

Writer and producer Shonda Rimes dished out answers to all your spoken and unspoken questions regarding her hit show "Grey's Anatomy."

Top most in the list of "Grey's Anatomy" followers was of course:

1. Why did she kill off Mcdreamy? Just like Meredith, "Grey's Anatomy" fans took it hard when their beloved Dr. Derek Shepherd died on Season 11.

Shonda defended her action of having McDreamy dead in a car accident because "it was the only way to preserve his and Meredith's true love."

"The decision to have the character die the way that he did was not a difficult one in the sense of what were the options?"

"Either Derek was going to walk out on Meredith, and leave her high and dry, and what was that going to mean? That was going to suggest that the love was not true, the thing we had said for 11 years was a lie and McDreamy wasn't McDreamy. For me, that was untenable," Rimes explained.

"Meredith and Derek's love had to remain Meredith and Derek's love. As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, because I had never really thought that was going to happen, it preserved what felt true to me, was that Derek was going to have to die in order for that love to remain honest."

According to NDTV Movies, Patrick Dempsey still had a year left in his contract, reason why viewers got the shock of their lives that the actor would be leaving the show after 11 seasons. The decision was mutual and they "had a lot of discussions about it."

Rimes added, "It wasn't easy or fun, it is never easy or fun. We've been working really hard for a long time together. We're family. Those choices and those decisions are never easy for any of us."

2. What will happen now to "Grey's Anatomy"

Shonda believes that Ellen Pompeo will carry the torch for Grey's Anatomy.

She said, "I think the show is Ellen. The show has always been Ellen."

The long-running medical drama has weathered the loss of Katherine Heigl as Izzie, Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang and most recently Patrick Dempsey as Dr. Derek Shepherd, as per FOX.

As for Shonda Rimes, "I am not going to comment on whether the show would fold without her, but I am telling you that that is where I am interested in writing."

What happens to Meredith after losing Derek?

Rimes said: "We ended last season in which we said the sun is going to rise again. We do have this world in which Meredith is single and she is living this life that she hadn't thought she was going to be living again. She's living in a house with her sisters, and she's surrounded by women who are dating and having a whole life, and she's not into any of that and starting to wonder if there's a there a second life here or are the best years of your life behind you."

Furthermore, as per Los Angeles Times, the creator of Shondaland said she is enthusiastic about the medical growth of Ellen Pompeo's character as a leader and her transformation.

Ellen Pompeo agreed to what Shonda Rimes disclosed, "So many people lose their spouses in a myriad of different ways and a lot people feel like they can't get up again," said the actress. "To tell that story about how life does go on after what you think is impossible is something that so many people can relate to."
