Ever since Michael Schumacher's unfortunate skiing accident at the French Alpine resort of Meribel in December 2013, reports about his condition remain scarce and rarely leaked to the public. As a matter of fact, Schumacher's family even requested a media blackout.
Since Michael Schumacher's family has been avoiding sharing details on the former F1 superstar's health condition, his manager Sabine Kehm recently revealed the reason why they opted to keep the information to themselves. According to Metro, Kehm admitted that Schumacher is a person who values his privacy.
What made Kehm silent all these years, however, was Schumacher's confession before his accident. Speaking at a media event at Lake Starnberg, Kehm revealed that Schumacher's "secret dream" was to disappear from the spotlight, The Huffington Post noted.
"In general the media have never reported on Michael and Corinna's private live," Kehm told 90 media professionals who were present at the event. "When he was in Switzerland, for example, it was clear he was a private individual."
"Once in a long discussion Michael said to me: 'You don't need to call me for the next year, I'm disappearing,'" she added. "I think it was his secret dream to be able to do that someday. That's why now I still want to protect his wishes in that I don't let anything get out."
Kehm also recalled how she learned about Michael Schumacher's accident. In fact, she found out about the accident after she got a call from a reporter asking her to confirm the news, Daily Mail reported.
"I couldn't confirm it - I was on holiday like a lot of people at the time," she explained. "After five minutes a journalist was having a go at me asking why I wouldn't confirm the accident. I took a lot of calls that afternoon, tried to get information myself and to get hold of Michael."
In order to prevent speculations and misinterpretation from the media, Kehm also admitted that she persistently avoided sharing exact information regarding Michael Schumacher's health condition. She emphasized that each sentence she divulge will only spark more inquiries.
"At the moment, I see no alternative," Kehm told Munich-based newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung (via Zee News). "Every sentence is a catalyst for new inquiries, every word is a beacon for further information. It never dies down."
Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation program at his home in Geneva, Switzerland. While he is reportedly under the care of 15 medical experts at a highly-secured and state-of-the-art custom built suite 24/7, Kehm said that his recovery is a "continuous process."
