Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’ News & Update: First Official Trailer Released; Watch One Direction’s Harry Styles In His Acting Debut

The first full trailer of Christopher Nolan's film "Dunkirk" was released to the public on Wednesday morning, causing a flurry of reactions to break out in the social media sphere. Though the British war movie features big-name stars such as Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance, it was former "One Direction" member Harry Styles that got Twitter abuzz.

The "One Direction" fandom was in full force as they tweeted their support for Styles' first acting project. Styles appears only in three quick sequences in the dramatic trailer, most notable of which is a scene that showed him flailing underwater. The singer's sister, journalist Gemma Styles, commented, "Super proud of @Harry_Styles but Good Lord, that drowning shot made me die inside. You get a lifeguard for Christmas."

"Dunkirk" is Nolan's tenth feature film, after critically and commercially acclaimed hits "Memento," "The Dark Knight" trilogy, and "Interstellar." Per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Pictures and Nolan sealed a deal wherein the director would get a payday of $20 million in addition to 20% of the movie's gross income in the box office. This is the most affluent deal any director has ever received since Peter Jackson earned an equivalent amount for "King Kong."

Set against the backdrop of World War II era, "Dunkirk" tells of the Allied soldiers' harrowing plight as they are forced to evacuate while a rival German army surrounds them. The film is based on real-life events that occurred during "Operation Dynamo" in Dunkirk, France between May 26 and Jun. 4, 1990.

"Dunkirk" is all set to be shown in cinemas worldwide on Jul. 21, 2017, per a report from Jobs & Hire. However, theaters that still project celluloid (that is, haven't gone fully digital) can show the film two days earlier. This is not the first time that a Nolan film has been distributed this way; "Interstellar" got the same treatment in 2014. This move is said to be Nolan's way of showcasing his love for old-school cinemas.
