Miguel Cotto could still collide with Gennady Golovkin in a title unification bout in his upcoming fight scheduled on Dec. 13 at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Cotto, who recently won the WBC middleweight title with a dominating victory against Sergio Martinez in June, insisted that they have not yet made a list of possible opponents for his upcoming fight.
The 33-year-old Puerto Rican, who became the first fighter from his country to win four world titles in four different divisions, said that he is scheduled to sit down with his team next week to discuss his next fight.
"I have no favorite [in mind for the] opponent. We have several [options], and we will take the best one. We're willing to listen to all proposals. We are going to sit down and negotiate. We will reach an agreement and enjoy a great fight," Cotto said via BoxingScene.
Cotto added that he will make sure that they will be picking the best opponent out there, expressing confidence that he and trainer Freddie Roach can arrange a fight plan that would give fans something to cheer about.
"Seeing how Freddie Roach has worked, the efforts he had made to improve my career, it's something that motivates me to be the best. Freddie is a key factor in the choice of my next opponent. We are confident that we will offer a great show," Cotto said.
Tim Loeffler, Golovkin's Promoter, is still pushing for a showdown between his fighter and Cotto. He praised Cotto for making a scintillating comeback as proven by the sellout crowd at MSG and then saying that the Cotto-Golovkin fight could be bigger than Cotto's previous fight against Martinez.
"Coming back and beating Sergio Martinez, who was supposed to be the best middleweight, the way Miguel dominated a true warrior like that, that proves Miguel's heart and his ability to rise to the occasion and his marketability," Cotto said. "Selling out Madison Square Garden like that is a testament. If you add that to what Gennady did [in his previous fight], that's an electric event at the Garden."
Loeffler admitted, though, that they can't force Cotto to face Golovkin, the reason why they are also preparing a Plan B for the reigning IBO and WBA middleweight champion's next fight.
