NBA Free Agents 2014 Rumors: Should the Cleveland Cavaliers Sign Ray Allen?

The Cleveland Cavaliers recently acquired veteran forward Shawn Marion, and reports indicated that the Cavs are not done tweaking their roster this summer as they are also looking to sign Ray Allen.

Allen recently insisted that he is still considering retirement, but reports indicated that the Cavaliers are confident that the veteran guard will eventually decide to join James in Cleveland.

"The Cavs are also optimistic about their chances of signing free agent guard Ray Allen prior to the start of training camp, a source said," Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports reported.

But while Allen will provide additional target for James and superstar point guard Kyrie Irving, Adi Joseph of USA Today believes that the Cavaliers should not focus on signing the all-time leader for three-pointer made.

Instead, Joseph pointed out that the Cavaliers should address their glaring need for a center or another point guard to backup Irving next season.

"The Cavaliers are ready to take flight in their second LeBron James era. They've got the wings, for sure," Joseph wrote. "But adding Allen on top of these other spoils? That seems like overkill for a team with major problems at two much more difficult-to-fill positions: backup point guard and center."

Joseph pointed out that James need more shooters around him to become more effective, but adding Allen won't make much of an impact since the Cavaliers have already signed Mike Miller and James Jones, who are both known as three-point shooting threats.

For the Cavaliers to become more effective and to improve their chances of winning the title next season, the Cavaliers should prioritize signing a backup to Anderson Varejao first, considering the fact that the Brazilian has missed a lot of games over the past four seasons.

Once the backup center position is filled, the Cavaliers should then a find another to point guard, point out that Cleveland need more than Matthew Dellavedova to backup Irving.

"The Chicago Bulls, Cleveland's biggest threat, have the deepest set of big men in the NBA with the additions of Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic," Joseph noted. "And if Irving gets hurt, the best bet at point could be starting shooting guard Dion Waiters, who gets criticized for selfish play, or second-year guard Matthew Dellavedova."
