Kirk Cousins struggled to find his rhythm on Thursday, but the Washington Redskins have no plans to trade their new starting quarterback as he is expected to start for the remainder of the season.
Cousins, who made his second start for the Redskins after Robert Griffin III went down with an injury, completed just 19-of-33 passes for 257 yards with four interceptions during their 45-14 loss to the New York Giants.
When asked in a recent interview if he thinks the Redskins will eventually be a team he can called his own, he said: "It's a tough dynamic to fully answer. I think that as a quarterback, if there is any doubt in the other 10 guys in the huddle looking at me that, 'Can this guy get it done for us? Can he move the ball?' then I've already failed."
Cousins was mentioned in several trade rumors during the offseason as he is looking for a bigger role elsewhere. Now that he has earn the starting job, Cousins insisted that the Redskins remain as Griffin's team, but he insisted that he is also ready to lead the team after Griffin went down with an injury.
"When I say that this is Robert's team, I don't mean that I can't step in and have an authority and make sure we move the football," Cousins said. "But I won't change my statement that this is Robert's team. He was drafted high for a reason. He's had success here. He's done a lot of good things. He's done nothing to have that be any different."
Griffin, who completed 31-of-40 passes for 305 yards before dislocating his left ankle, needs six to eight weeks to recover from the injury, which means that there is still a chance that he could return to action.
When Griffin returns to action, Cousins is hoping that he will be in a good position to be considered as the new starter or play a bigger role as Griffin's backup.
"It's my job as a backup on this team to hopefully when he comes back give him a team with a good record and put him in a good spot to have success down the stretch," Cousins said. "By no means does that say that I can't go in there as a backup and hopefully get the job done."
