Soccer Transfer Rumors 2015: Steven Gerrard Open To Leaving Liverpool After Current Season

Steven Gerrard is focused solely on his club career, but the former England Three Lions captain might find himself looking for a new team next year.

Gerrard recently retired from international football after he captained England during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, saying that he wants to focus on his club career.

However, Gerrard's contract is set to expire in June and there are no signs that Liverpool is looking to extend his stay at Anfield beyond the current season.

The 34-year-old midfielder denied reports suggesting that he might just retire after the current season. He said that he plans to continue playing for the next several years, but he admitted that he might not finish his career with Liverpool, which has been his club since he was nine years old.

"I won't be retiring this summer," Gerrard said via Daily Telegraph. "I will play beyond this season. We will have to wait and see if that's at Liverpool or somewhere else. That's Liverpool's decision."

Gerrard and Liverpool are off to a disappointing start this year after finishing second to Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League last season.

Liverpool currently sits seventh on the Premier League table after getting just 14 points in nine matches with three wins, four draws and three defeats.

One of the main reasons why the Liverpool are on pace to finish outside of the top five this season is their decision to sell Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona, a season after the striker scored the most league goals.

"When you come close to the title, it is important you keep your main players. It's not just about those coming in, it's about what got you there," Gerrard said. "It's not just about those coming in, it's about what got you there."

Gerrard also voiced out that the club should have made a strong push to acquire Cesc Fabregas or Diego Costa by using the money they got from the Suarez transfer deal, but he knows that their ownership group has its own policies.

"I would love a Fabregas or Costa here, but I have to understand how the owners want to do it and accept I am a Liverpool player, not a Chelsea or Manchester City player," Gerrard added.
