Emma Watson's Belle No Damsel in Distress; 'Beauty and the Beast' Gives Female Lead a 'Real' Career

Emma Watson became popular after portraying the role of Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" film series. She is also known as an activist and a feminist who fights for the rights of women, promoting education for girls in Bangladesh and Zambia. She was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in July 2014. This coming 2017, Watson will play the role of Belle in the Classic film of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast".

Like most other girls, Emma Watson also loves the 1991 "Beauty and the Beast" and watched the classic movie repeatedly. Who would have thought that after 25 years, she will play the lead role, Belle?

But there is an additional twist to her character. According to The Telegraph, there is a backstory about Belle's life in the new movie. In the 1991 film there is not much information as to why the character of Belle would not fit in. That is why a minor revision was made for Belle's character. Watson being a feminist turned her character into something different: an independent woman.

In the upcoming movie, instead of reading books most of the time (which the original character in 1991 loved to do) Belle became an inventor. She invented a washing machine, for example, so as to spend less time doing the laundry.

In the original plot of the animated movie, Maurice, Belle's father, was the inventor. However, the backstory represents Watson's advocacy regarding on equality in every aspect.

Entertainment Weekly reveals the exclusive photos from the upcoming 2017 film "Beauty and the Beast". The pictures portray Belle and Maurice talking in front of a worktable with music boxes, Emma who slays the yellow dress of Belle, the Beast and Belle together, and many more. Surely, a lot of people are excited because of these. And whatever will be the backstory, the fans will still watch Emma Watson and the other cast on March 17, 2017.
