How To Upgrade Your Home Office: Inexpensive Ways To Make Your Work Space More Inviting

People who work from home have a few luxuries that office workers don't have. There's the fact that one doesn't have to make the daily commute to get the work, and there's no need to share a cubicle with an obnoxious co-worker. However, most people don't take the time to create a homework space that would result in productivity, and this could lead to a decline in work quality.

There are many ways to upgrade one's home office without spending a fortune. With a bit of time spent organizing, a few accessories and a bit of DIY, you can make over your workspace to make it more inviting.

First, do you actually have a home office? If you're using the dining table as a makeshift workspace, now is the time to carve out an area for you to work in. It doesn't have to be a whole room--a home office can be an unused space that could fit a desk and a chair, so if you could find a nook to set up, then you're off to a great start.

Next, decide on a color scheme for your home office. White with pops of color looks bright and cheerful, while dark color schemes with bright accents look sophisticated and very chic. Now add the following things to your workspace.

Desk

Your desk doesn't have to be the same type of furniture as those in a typical office. It can be anything from an old TV armoire to a flea market find. Give it a fresh coat of white paint so you can easily update its look whenever you want to. If it's made of wood and you like the look of it, simply clean it up and leave it bare or apply a coat of clear varnish.

Chair

Your home office chair doesn't need to be the ergonomic kind with wheels. Think outside the box and see what you can find at home. Ottomans and anything without a back are definitely out, as you need some back support while working. Reupholster the chair with an easy-to-clean yet pretty fabric. Add a cushion for added comfort and color.

Desk organizers

No need to buy generic desk organizers from the office supply store. Why not make your own? You can turn empty cans into pen and pencil holders by cleaning them thoroughly and covering them with some scrapbook paper or washi tape. Mason jars make good pen holders as well. For your papers, you can file them away in inexpensive file boxes in prints or solid colors and store them under your desk.

Office supplies

No need to go crazy with office supplies when you're working at home. All you really need is a laptop or desktop computer, a printer, a calendar, a stapler, scissors, some paper clips, and a tape dispenser. Keep seldom used supplies in a pretty box to give your desk an uncluttered look. Also, manage your computer cords by using double-sided Velcro for a neat look.

Extras

Can't bear working in a bare workspace? Hang up a few framed prints of favorite photos, and get a small potted plant for your desk. You can also add a whiteboard or corkboard so you're reminded of important tasks. You can also have a bookcase in the same material and color as your desk for a unified look. A rug in a pretty pattern can liven up space and add warmth to your home office.
