Manny Pacquiao Could Face Canelo Alvarez As Oscar De La Hoya, Bob Arum Express Desire To End Boxing ‘Cold War’

Fight fans are still dreaming of seeing Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. trade blows against each other, but the former pound-for-pound king might be involved in another 'super fight' soon.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Pacquiao, who is coming off an impressive win over Timothy Bradley earlier this month, could face pay-per-view superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, possibly later this year.

Sources indicated that Oscar De La Hoya, who handles Alvarez, recently had a discussion with Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, about ending what is dubbed as boxing 'cold war' between the two companies.

Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions have not worked together over the last five years, preventing potential blockbuster fights from happening.

But in an interview with Lance Pumigre of LA Times, De La Hoya appeared to be in good terms with Arum, his former promoter when he was still dominating inside the boxing ring.

"Anything's possible," De La Hoya said. "That's one of the reasons I was extending the olive branch. The fans want to see these kinds of fights."

De La Hoya said that he might have some differences with Arum, but their relationship has always been good, pointing out that he doesn't care about Arum's rift with some Golden Boy Promotions official.

"If anyone with Golden Boy has any differences with Bob, it's on them," De La Hoya said. "I have nothing against Bob and I feel making fights with Bob is beneficial to the fans and the market."

Arum echoed De La Hoya's statement, saying that he can always talk to the 'Golden Boy' any time he wants. The Top Rank honcho's rift with GBP were mostly with CEO Richard Schaefer.

"All this baloney about a cold war has never really applied to Oscar and myself," Arum said. "We can talk about any subject in boxing rationally. We might disagree on a particular point, but we can talk. I hope we'll get together and have some significant meetings in the near future."

Alvarez will face Erislandy Lara on July 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but he has already declared that he will have another fight later this year, same with Pacquiao.

However, the likelihood of the fight depends on what Pacquiao intends to do as previous reports indicated that the Filipino boxing icon wants a fifth fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.
