Gennady Golovkin has been calling out Miguel Cotto over the past several weeks, and the unbeaten middleweight champion might get his wish of a title unification bout against the Puerto Rican.
Freddie Roach told Dan Rafael of ESPN that they are looking at the possibility of defending Cotto's World Boxing Council middleweight title against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but Golovkin is also one of their top options.
"I like the Canelo fight better, but I like a fight with Golovkin second. I'd have no problem taking that fight," said Roach, who is now 2-0 with Cotto after their win against Sergio Martinez in June.
But for the title unification bout to happen, Roach gave one condition - Golovkin, who has been fighting at 160 pounds, should go down to 154 pounds for the Cotto fight.
"If we did fight him I'd like the fight to be closer to 154 [pounds] to make him come down a little bit. He's very strong, but I think we definitely could negotiate that fight for sure," Roach said. "Cotto made 155 last time [for the Martinez fight]. He's a little smaller than Golovkin, so I'd like him to come down as far as possible."
Golovkin successfully defended his International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight title against Daniel Geale last week - a win that put him one step closer to landing a big-money fight.
Roach was at ringside during the Golovkin-Geale showdown. The Hall of Fame trainer said that he has never watch Golovkin before his fight against Geale.
The veteran trainer came away impressed with Golovkin, especially with the way he controlled the fight, but Roach said that he and Cotto won't have any problem dealing with the Kazakh champion.
"Golovkin puts himself in great position to punch. He was very impressive. He took a punch to give a punch. He's very strong. His power is quite impressive, but he's knocking out middle-class guys, not top-level guys. I could definitely get Miguel ready for that fight," Roach said.
Golovkin's camp - led Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions and trainer Abel Sanchez - previously said that they could go down up to the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds as long as it is a major fight for their 32-year-old fighter.
