Boxing News 2014: Canelo Alvarez Could Face Julio Cesar Chavez, James Kirkland, Demetrius Andrade, Joshua Clottey

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will return to the ring in December and reports indicated that the boxing superstar will face Julio Cesar Chavez, James Kirkland, Demetrius Andrade or Joshua Clottey in his next fight.

Edison Reynoso, who manages the career of the Mexican superstar, said in an interview with BoxingScene that Alvarez is still open to facing Chavez, but for one strict condition.

Alvarez, who holds an impressive 44-1-1 record with 32 knockouts, will only face Chavez if his fellow Mexican agrees to a 160-pound catchweight for the fight.

"A possible confrontation between Chavez and Alvarez has been mentioned for quite some time and it would only be possible at 160-pounds, where there is no advantage for anyone," Reynoso said.

Chavez, who has a 48-1-1 record with 32 knockout victories, is coming off two-straight wins against Brian Vera, which were fought at the super middleweight limit of 168 pounds, while Canelo recently won against Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara at 155 pounds.

Reynoso confirmed that they have recently sat down with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions officials about Canelo's next fight, saying that they are considering three possible opponents at this point.

"We are in negotiations. We met with Oscar de la Hoya, Eric Gomez and Robert Diaz of Golden Boy," Reynoso said. "We seem to have three opponents. One of them is obvious, but they told us to wait until the weekend to see if they could close the deal. It will happen in December or the last Saturday of November. All of that is being negotiated."

Reynoso did not reveal the names of the three fighters that are considering, but analysts believe that they are referring to Kirkland, Clottey and Andrade, the World Boxing Organization light middleweight champion.

Kirkland, who is coming off a sixth-round knockout win against Glen Tapia to improve his record to 32-1 with 28 stoppage wins, is considered as favorite to land the bout.

Miguel Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion, is also being linked the Canelo, but the Puerto Rican will likely defend his title for the first time against a less-heralded opponent in December before considering facing Alvarez, possibly in May next year.
